What is a Collection Assessment?
A collection assessment aims at providing a factual and accurate description of the collection. It is a systematic analysis that supports the library in its role and goals in the context of its budget.
The Benefits of an Assessment
- Library administrators benefit by having a tool to adapt the collection, a tool for vital planning, a vehicle for response to budget changes, and a resource sharing and communication tool which help in relationships with other libraries.
- Library faculty and staff benefit through better understanding of the collection, having a basis for developing the collection, and enhancement and practice of collection development skills.
- In our CARLI consortium the assessment is essential in determining how we fit into the system and what should be expected for our further growth in the context of our cooperative relationship.
