Chicago State University library opened to the public at a formal dedication ceremony on October 12, 2006. The library has many outstanding new features that will enable users to find and retrieve information and materials quickly and efficiently.
The library now has an Automated Storage and Retrieval System called ROVER (Retrieval Online Via Electronic Robot), and users will notice a major change in the way they retrieve materials from the library
Library staff members have placed about 80% of the library’s collections including all of the bound periodicals, Black Studies publications, archive materials, microforms and most of the older books (those published before 1991) into ROVER.
Newer items (those published from 1991 on), current periodicals, and some special collections and older heavily illustrated items are on the shelves in the circulating collections on the second, third, and fourth floors.
Browsing the collection to find desired materials is done using the Library’s online catalog.
Floor maps of the library are being created to help users locate the areas where different kinds of materials are shelved. Users with valid library IDs may check out items located on the shelves either at the Circulation Desk or at the two Self-Service Express Checkout machines located near the Circulation Desk on the first floor.
Items located in ROVER are retrieved by requesting them through the online catalog and then going to the circulation desk to pick up the items. (Most items in ROVER circulate, but some items are library use only.)
Be sure to ask a staff member for assistance if you experience any difficulty finding materials in the library or using the request command in the catalog.
The two Self-Service Express Checkout machines on the first floor near the Circulation Desk enable library patrons to check-out materials without staff assistance. Have your library ID card with you and then follow the on-screen directions to use these machines. Be sure to ask a staff member for assistance if you experience any difficulties.
